First Impressions in the Real World

We meet new people every day…if we leave our house that is. Whether it is at the gas station, the bank, grocery story, work…whatever. We come in contact, even if just in passing, with new people almost every day of our lives.

So…what do they REALLY think of you?

These strangers that pass us by barely making eye contact, yet they exist within the same world we reside in. What goes through their minds when they see us? What kind of first impression do you make on society at large? Ever wonder?

At some point or another in our lives we’ve all ‘people watched’ either intentionally or unintentionally. I admit to being guilty of it myself a time or two or twenty in my life. Back in high school a couple of friends and I would run over to the mall, buy a hug bag of Carmel corn, pop a squat on one of the benches where all the branches of the mall met in the center, smoke cigarettes and stuff ourselves until we felt sick. Yes, we added commentary. No, it wasn’t always flattering. And yes, I am positive we looked like a trio of idiots. Oh, did I mention these were two male friends!

But in our defense, we were teenagers and it was the 80s. Not the greatest decade in fashion. I’m sure I looked so cool in my holy jeans, concert t-shirts and black fringed leather jacket. I had the big 80s hair and even my leather boots had fringe on them!

Either way, the vast majority of us are guilty of it at some point or another in our lives, whether we’re at the mall, the state fair, or just out goofing around with friends. And we’re all guilty of laughing or being mortified at the famous (hideous, horrific, grotesque, bizarre, ridiculous, lewd, nasty) images of Walmart that show up on social media from time to time.

‘People watching’ is the cheapest form of entertainment regardless of what region you live in. Just a few weeks back I went out to a casino in Phoenix with my best friend and was guilty of muttering to her ‘Don’t people own a mirror?’. It’s not that I am a judgmental person who has a problem with anyone’s size. Anyone who knows me will tell you that, but what I do believe is that people should dress for their size and body type. I understand that society has put so much pressure on women to feel like we should all be a size 2 Barbie Doll, but let’s face it…few women are! Hell, I wish I was a size two again, but it’s not going to happen. That being said, if you are a size twelve…DON’T go out for the evening in your sister’s outfit that is a size six. It DOES NOT look good!!! Yes, you will draw attention to you. Yes, people will look at you…but do you really want them thinking ‘that looks like two pigs fighting under a blanket’? NO ONE wants to see that!!

We are all guilty of having bad hair days or days when we go out looking less than stellar (and of course, that’s when we ALWAYS run into someone we know…it’s the laws of nature, lol), and I’m not saying a person has to be dressed to the nines to run to the mailbox. Quite the contrary. We should all be individuals and dress in what pleases us, what shows off our personality, what defines us. Personally, I do not dress to please anyone but myself. I’ve even had one Professor in college call my clothes ‘eccentric’. I took it as a compliment. Hell, I have a kid who has died her hair every color of the rainbow and I gave her my blessing each time. It was simply her showing off her individuality and uniqueness…something I strongly encourage in everyone.

What I am saying is that ladies, don’t wear a turtle neck with your cleavage bursting out the collar! If you’re not a prostitute, don’t wear the uniform! Men, pull up your damn pants, no one cares to see your butt crack! And being a plumber is no excuse! Remember, muffin tops are only good when they are from a bakery…NOT hanging over the top of your pants!!

So people keep in mind the next time you pass someone on the street or in a store and never give them a passing thought…perhaps the impression you make on them made them pause for a simple moment and think of something…make sure that when/if that happens, you’re putting something positive in their minds and not something comical…Unless comical is what you’re going after. If that be the case…more power to you!! I’m sure you’ll succeed admirably.

Embrace who you are and be proud of it!!!

In the gripping conclusion of the bestselling EVE series, Jocelyn and Jackson come face to face with the challenges of living combined lives on both planes. While Jackson struggles under the demands of his chosen profession, Jocelyn discovers hidden branches on the family tree. But the more she uncovers, the deeper she finds herself and her family in an uncharted realm that no one considered possible. Can EVE not only skip around with family members but also switch branches?

The happy couple soon learns that a branch, like time, has the tendency to bend in the most unexpected directions and occasionally even break.
